About Shahpura and Phad painting
Shahpura is where the Phad scroll paintings come from: long cloth panels telling the stories of Pabuji and Devnarayan, carried from village to village by Bhopa priests who sing them through the night. The Joshi family of Chitera painters have made them here for generations and their workshops sell to visitors. The town is also the seat of the Ramsnehi sect, whose Ramdwara draws a big Phooldol fair at Holi.
