About Raichur Fort

Raichur Fort was built by the Kakatiyas in 1294 and became the prize of a long contest between Vijayanagara and the Bahmani and Bijapur sultans, ending in the battle of Raichur in 1520. The hill fort has huge fitted stone walls, a Kakatiya inscription on the Naurangi Darwaza, and a Persian style palace called Bala Hisar at the top. The climb to the top from the town takes about half an hour. Sunset from the ramparts is the best time to be up there.
