About Nizamabad Black Pottery
A small town 12 km from Azamgarh whose potters make the glossy black clay ware with silver-coloured inlay that got a GI tag in 2015. The clay is fired in a smoky, oxygen-starved kiln to turn black, then rubbed with mustard oil and etched with floral patterns filled with a zinc and mercury paste. The craft is said to have come with potters from Kutch in Aurangzeb's time. Workshops in the Hussainabad quarter will show you the process if you ask.
