About Mahmud Gawan Madrasa

The Madrasa of Mahmud Gawan was built in 1472 by the Persian scholar and Bahmani prime minister as a residential university with a library, mosque and lecture halls. It follows Central Asian style, with a tall minaret and coloured tile work on the front that survives in patches. Part of the building was destroyed in 1696 when gunpowder stored inside exploded. It stands in the old town of Bidar, a short walk from the fort.
