About Kumartuli, the Potters' Quarter

A cramped, busy lane of potters in north Kolkata where clay idols of Durga and other gods are made by hand, on bamboo and straw frames. Work is at its peak from August to the Durga Puja in the autumn, and the artists paint the eyes of the goddess on Mahalaya. It is a good place for photos, but ask before you click, and avoid rain and a big crowd. Go on a weekday morning.
