About Kiradu Temples
Five ruined temples of the 11th and 12th centuries in a fold of hills 35 km west of Barmer, built under the Solanki rulers when this was the town of Kiratkoop. The Someshwar temple is the best preserved, with carved bands of elephants, dancers and gods that have earned the site its Khajuraho comparison. A local legend says the place is cursed after dark, which is why nobody lives here; in practice it is simply empty and very fine.
What to see and do
- Someshwar temple and its carved friezes
- Four smaller Vishnu and Shiva temples in ruin
- Solanki-period sculpture
