About Kangla Fort
The old seat of the Meitei kings of Manipur, on the bank of the Imphal river in the middle of the city. The big grounds hold temples, a sacred pond, the ruins of the old palace and the gateway with the Kangla Sha, a pair of mythical dragon lion figures, which is the symbol of the state. The fort stayed under army control for years and was handed back to the people in 2004, so it is now an open heritage park. Go in the morning, wear comfortable shoes, and allow a couple of hours.
