About Harihareshwara Temple, Harihar
A Hoysala temple of about 1224 on the bank of the Tungabhadra, built by Polalva, a commander of king Narasimha II, and enlarged under the later Hoysalas. Its deity is Harihara, half Shiva and half Vishnu, said to have appeared here to end a demon. The hall has lathe turned pillars and the outer walls carry Hoysala carving in soapstone, though simpler than at Halebidu or Somanathapura. Harihar is on the Pune to Bengaluru highway, 14 km from Davanagere.
