About Ghazipur Opium Factory
The East India Company opened its opium works here in 1820 to process Bihar and Benares poppy for the China trade, and the Government Opium and Alkaloid Works still runs on the same site, the oldest and largest legal opium factory in the world. Kipling wrote it up in 1888 in In an Opium Factory. It is a secured central government plant: you can look at the gates and the long walls from the road, and that is all. Do not point a camera at it.
What to see and do
- The 1820 gateway and boundary walls, from outside
- Riverside site on the Ganga
