About Lord Cornwallis Tomb

Charles Cornwallis, who surrendered at Yorktown in 1781 and later ran the Permanent Settlement as Governor-General, died at Ghazipur on 5 October 1805 while travelling upriver on a second term. The East India Company raised this domed Grecian rotunda over his grave, with a marble bust and relief panels by John Flaxman of Indian and British figures in mourning. It stands in a tidy ASI garden above the Ganga and is the grandest thing in town.
