About Dowleswaram Barrage
Sir Arthur Cotton built the original anicut across the Godavari at Dowleswaram in 1852, turning the delta into the rice bowl of Andhra; the present barrage, named after him, replaced it in 1982. It is 4 km south of Rajamahendravaram and the road across it gives a wide view of the river spread over several kilometres. The Sir Arthur Cotton Museum at the site shows old tools, drawings and the story of the delta canals. In flood season the sight of water pouring through the gates draws crowds.
