About Chitradurga Fort

A hill fort built among huge granite boulders, strengthened by the Nayaka palegars of Chitradurga in the 17th and 18th centuries and taken by Hyder Ali in 1779. Seven concentric walls with zigzag gateways climb the rocks, enclosing temples, granaries, oil pits and water tanks. The narrow gap known as Onake Obavva Kindi recalls the woman who is said to have killed intruders one by one with a pestle. Reaching the upper temples means a climb of an hour over rock.
