About Banavasi
Banavasi on the Varada river is the oldest known town in Karnataka and was the capital of the Kadambas, the first dynasty to rule from the region, from the 4th century. The Madhukeshwara temple at its centre began under the Kadambas and was added to by later kings, and holds a carved stone cot and a big Nandi. The poet Pampa praised the town in the 10th century. Kadambotsava, a cultural festival, is held every December. Sirsi is 22 km away.
