About Amaravati Mahachaitya
The Amaravati Mahachaitya was one of the largest Buddhist stupas in India, built from the 3rd century BCE and enlarged under the Satavahanas. Today only the drum and base survive, with the famous carved slabs taken to museums in Chennai and London. The ASI museum next to the site keeps a good collection of the remaining sculpture. The Amareswara Swamy Shiva temple on the Krishna bank is 1 km away. Amaravathi town is 35 km from Guntur.
