About Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves

Two low hills outside Bhubaneswar cut with Jain rock shelters from the second and first centuries BCE, many of them linked to the Kalinga king Kharavela. Udayagiri has the well known Rani Gumpha and Hathigumpha, which carries a long inscription about Kharavela's rule. Khandagiri has a small Jain temple at its top. Both can be done in two or three hours, with some stairs; monkeys are common, so keep food away.
