About Thimmamma Marrimanu
A single banyan tree whose canopy covers about 19,000 square metres (nearly 5 acres), listed in the Guinness book in 1989 as the largest tree canopy in the world. Local belief is that it grew from the spot where a woman named Thimmamma committed sati in 1434, and a small shrine to her sits under the tree. It is 25 km from Kadiri on a rural road; a fair on Shivaratri draws large crowds, and childless couples come to pray under the tree.
