About Penukonda Fort

The second capital of the Vijayanagara empire after the fall of Hampi in 1565, with a hill fort rising some 900 m above the town on the Bengaluru to Anantapur highway. On the plain are the Gagan Mahal palace, Jain and Hindu temples and the dargah of Babayya; the fort walls climb the hill past gateways to a summit with tanks and small shrines. The full climb takes two to three hours and there is little shade, so start early.
