About Srikurmam Temple
The only major temple in India where Vishnu is worshipped as Kurma, the tortoise. The shrine stands 13 km east of Srikakulam near the coast, with two flag poles and an idol that faces west. Inscriptions on its walls go back to the 11th century and the pillared halls show Kalinga building style. The compound is also a sanctuary for star tortoises, which you can see near the tank.
What to see and do
- Kurmanatha Swamy sanctum facing west
- Carved pillars of the mandapa
- Star tortoise enclosure
- Inscriptions from the Ganga and Gajapati periods
