About Shorapur Fort and Taylor Manzil
Shorapur, also spelt Surapura, was the seat of a Bedar Nayaka kingdom whose hill fort held out against the Mughals and later the British. Raja Venkatappa Nayaka rose against the British in 1857 and the town remembers him as a hero. Taylor Manzil, the hilltop house of Meadows Taylor, the British administrator and author of Confessions of a Thug, is now a rest house with a view over the town. Shorapur is about 50 km west of Yadgir.
