About Sannati and Kanaganahalli
Sannati, on the Bhima river in Chittapur taluk, is one of the most important Buddhist sites in south India. Excavations at nearby Kanaganahalli uncovered a large Maha Stupa of the Satavahana period, with carved limestone panels and a rare stone portrait labelled as Emperor Ashoka. The Chandrala Parameshwari temple at Sannati stands on the ancient mound where Ashokan edicts were found. The site is about 60 km south of Kalaburagi and has little shade, so carry water.
