About Sankisa
One of the eight great Buddhist sites, where the Buddha is said to have descended from the Trayastrimsa heaven after preaching to his mother. Xuanzang saw a city here; today there is a large mound with the Bisari Devi temple on top, an Ashokan pillar capital carved as an elephant, and monasteries built by Sri Lankan and Burmese Buddhists. Few visitors outside pilgrimage groups.
