About Rajgad
Shivaji's capital for 26 years, and by common consent the most complete hill fort in Maharashtra. It is built on three long ridges, Padmavati, Suvela and Sanjeevani Machi, radiating from a central citadel, so you can spend a full day and still not see it all. Most people camp overnight rather than rush it.
What to see and do
- Balekilla, the upper citadel
- Suvela Machi and its natural rock hole
- Sanjeevani Machi's double fortification walls
- Padmavati temple and lake, where trekkers camp
- Chor Darwaja, the hidden escape gate
- Views across to Torna along the connecting ridge
Part of Sahyadri (Western Ghats).
