About Mumba Devi Temple
This is the temple the city is named after. Mumba Devi is the goddess of the Koli fisherfolk who lived here long before anyone else, and Mumbai is simply her name with an honorific. The original stood near where Victoria Terminus is now and was moved to Bhuleshwar around 1737 when the British wanted the land. It is small, loud and wedged into the market, which is exactly right for a goddess of working people.
