About Banganga Tank & Walkeshwar
A freshwater tank on Malabar Hill, a couple of hundred metres from the sea and somehow still sweet. The story is that Ram stopped here on the way to Lanka, grew thirsty, and shot an arrow into the ground to bring up a branch of the Ganga. Walkeshwar means the sand lord, because he is said to have made the linga out of sand when no stone could be found. The tank itself dates to 1127. Walking down the steps into it is the closest thing Mumbai has to time travel.
