About Makrana
The white marble of the Taj Mahal and the Victoria Memorial came out of the ground here, and the quarries are still working, deep stepped pits with blocks being sawn out by wire. The town is one long marble workshop where statues and slabs are cut on the roadside. The pits are private and unfenced, so ask before going close; the workshops are open to anyone who walks in.
