About Khichan Demoiselle Cranes
Every winter since the 1970s the Jain families of Khichan have fed grain to demoiselle cranes that fly in from Central Asia, and the flock has grown from a few dozen to well over twenty thousand. The feeding happens in a fenced ground called the chugga ghar early in the morning and again in the evening, and the sound of the birds coming in over the village is the whole point. Late November to February is when they are all here.
