About Juna Mahal
The old palace of Dungarpur, started in the 13th century by Rawal Veer Singh on a hill above the town and lived in until the 1940s. It looks like a fort from outside and is a seven-storey warren inside, with murals, mirror work and glass inlay on nearly every wall and floor, and a cupboard in one of the top rooms painted with scenes from the Kama Sutra, which the caretaker will open for you. Steep stairs, no lights, bring a torch.
What to see and do
- Murals and glass inlay across seven floors
- The Kama Sutra cupboard
- Views over Dungarpur from the roof
- The unlit staircases, more fun than they sound
Part of Aravalli.
