About Chand Baori
Built in the 8th or 9th century by the Nikumbha ruler Chanda, this is the deepest and most geometric of the stepwells: 3,500 narrow steps in 13 tiers dropping some 30 metres to green water, with a pillared pavilion on the fourth side. The Harshat Mata temple alongside was smashed in medieval raids and its carved fragments are stacked around the tank. The steps are fenced now, so you walk the rim.
What to see and do
- Thirteen tiers of 3,500 steps
- The royal pavilion on the north side
- Harshat Mata temple and its stacked sculpture
- Abhaneri village, 95 km from Jaipur on the Agra road
