About Bankapura Fort
Bankapura is an old walled fort town that changed hands between the Chalukyas, Vijayanagara and the Adil Shahis, and its fort enclosure is now a peacock conservation reserve with several hundred peafowl. Inside stands the Nagareshwara temple, a Chalukya building known for a hall of about 108 carved pillars. The peacocks are easiest to see early morning and at dusk near the fort walls. Bankapura is 3 km from Shiggaon on the Pune to Bengaluru highway, about 25 km from Haveri.
