About Shaheed Smarak, Ballia
In August 1942, in the Quit India uprising, crowds under Chittu Pandey took the collectorate and the jail and Ballia ran its own administration for about a week before troops retook it, which is why the district still calls itself Baghi Ballia, rebel Ballia. The memorial to those killed stands in the town centre with a park and the names of the dead. Ballia marks 19 August, the day the district declared itself free, every year.
