About Bairath (Viratnagar)

Bairath is one of the oldest Buddhist sites in India. On Bijak ki Pahari are the foundations of a circular Mauryan chaitya of the 3rd century BC, and the Bhabru rock edict of Ashoka was found here in 1840 and is now in Kolkata. Below the hill the town has a Mughal-era gate and a painted Jain temple, and local tradition puts the Pandavas in exile here, with the boulders of Bhim ki Dungri as proof.
