About Undavalli Caves
The Undavalli caves are a four storey rock-cut monastery cut into a sandstone hill on the south bank of the Krishna, 8 km from Vijayawada across the barrage. They date from around the 4th to 5th century and began as Buddhist caves before being converted to Hindu use. The main hall holds a huge reclining Vishnu carved from a single block. The upper terraces look out over the river and paddy fields. It is an ASI site and opens from sunrise to sunset.
