About Piprahwa Stupa
In 1898 the landowner W. C. Peppé dug into this stupa and found a soapstone casket with a Brahmi inscription saying it held relics of the Buddha deposited by his Sakya kinsmen. ASI digs in the 1970s went deeper, found older caskets, and turned up monastery seals reading Kapilavastu, the basis for the Indian claim that the Sakya capital was here rather than at Tilaurakot in Nepal. The stupa is a low brick mound in a quiet park.
