About Nagarjuni Caves
A kilometre and a half east of Barabar, on the neighbouring Nagarjuni hill, are three more Mauryan caves cut for the Ajivikas by Ashoka's grandson Dasharatha, whose inscriptions date them to about 232 BCE. Gopika is the largest, a long polished tunnel-vaulted hall; Vadathika and Vapiyaka are smaller and on the far side. Fewer people come here than to Barabar, and the walk between the two hills is pleasant in winter.
What to see and do
- Gopika cave, the largest of the three
- Dasharatha Maurya inscriptions, about 232 BCE
- Vadathika and Vapiyaka caves
- Quiet walk over from Barabar
