About Mandar Hill
A granite hill some 700 feet high that tradition names as Mandara, the mountain used to churn the ocean; a groove spiralling round the rock is said to be the mark of the serpent rope. Jains hold that Vasupujya attained nirvana on the summit, where their temple stands. At the foot is Papharni, a tank with a rock-cut shrine in its middle. A ropeway now runs up; the stepped path takes about an hour. Bounsi Mela on Makar Sankranti is the big day.
