About Kumaraswamy Temple, Sandur
The Kumaraswamy Temple stands on the Swamimalai hills above Sandur, in a green valley ringed by the iron ore hills of the Sandur range. The main shrine to Kartikeya and the adjacent Parvati temple date from the Kadamba and Chalukya periods, roughly the 7th to 10th centuries, and the sculpture is early and plain. Sandur itself, about 50 km from Ballari and 40 km from Hospet, is a former princely state with a small palace and noticeably cooler air than the plains. The hill drive is best after the rains.
