About Kolar Gold Fields
A former mining town where gold was dug from some of the deepest shafts in the world for over a century until the mines closed in 2001. The old colonial bungalows, churches, clubs and the mine headframes remain, and the pale hills of cyanide waste are visible from the road. It was one of the first towns in India to get electricity, in 1902. The shafts and dumps are not open to the public, so see the town from the roads and heritage buildings.
