About Kargil
A town on the Suru river that is the usual halfway stop on the Srinagar to Leh highway, with a mix of Shia and Buddhist culture. The market sells dry fruit and apricots, and the town is a base for the Suru valley, Zanskar and Drass. It is also associated with the 1999 war. Many travellers stay a night here between Sonamarg and Leh.
