About Gooty Fort
One of the oldest hill forts in Andhra Pradesh, built on a shell shaped granite hill above Gooty town and held by the Chalukyas, Vijayanagara, the Marathas under Murari Rao and later Hyder Ali and the British. Fifteen gateways, ramparts and water cisterns climb the hill to the citadel; a rock at the top is known as the seat of Murari Rao. Gooty is a railway junction on the Chennai to Mumbai line, so the fort is an easy day out from Anantapur (50 km).
