About Gangasagar (Sagar Island)
A sacred island where the Ganga meets the Bay of Bengal, about 130 km from Kolkata, reached by road and a short ferry across the Muriganga river. Pilgrims take a dip at the Gangasagar sangam and visit the Kapil Muni Ashram. The huge Makar Sankranti mela in the middle of January draws many lakhs of people, so go well planned. Outside the fair, the island is quiet, with a calm beach.
