Privacy Policy
Last updated 28 October 2026
Jagah Pedia is a free guide to places in India. It has no accounts, no sign up and no tracking. This page explains, in plain words, what the site does with your information, which is very little.
The short version
- We do not ask you to create an account or give your name, phone number or email to use the site.
- There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking tools, and we do not set cookies.
- Your saved places, state, theme and similar choices are kept only in your own browser. We never receive them.
- Location is optional and off by default. If you turn it on, your device's position is rounded to about 1 km and checked with a free lookup service to find your town. The result stays in your browser, and you can delete it with one button.
- If you suggest a place, the site opens WhatsApp or your email app with the message already written. Nothing reaches us until you press send yourself.
- We do not sell or share your information, because we do not have it.
1. Who runs this site
Jagah Pedia is run by Santosh Pandey, an individual based in Pune, Maharashtra, India. It is a personal project, not a company. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean Santosh Pandey. You can reach me at travelwala.chora@gmail.com.
For the purposes of India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, I am the person who decides how any personal data connected with this site is used. Because the site itself collects none, that responsibility is small, but I still take it seriously.
2. What we do not do
- We do not run user accounts, logins or sign up forms on the public site.
- We do not use Google Analytics, Meta Pixel or any similar analytics, advertising or tracking tool.
- We do not set cookies. Our own settings use your browser's local storage, which is explained below.
- We do not build profiles of visitors, and we do not sell, rent or trade information about anyone.
- We do not collect your name, email, phone number, address or payment details through the site.
If this ever changes, for example if analytics or accounts are added, this policy will be updated first and the date at the top will change.
3. What is saved on your device
To remember your choices, the site stores small pieces of text in your browser's local storage. This stays on your phone or computer. It is never sent to us. You can see and delete it any time from your browser settings (look for "site data" or "clear browsing data").
| What | Name in storage | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Places you saved or marked as done in My List | kahanchale.v1 | So your list is there when you come back |
| The state you last chose (and whether you picked it by hand), and your "where to look" choice on Home | kahanchale.state, kahanchale.statepicked, kahanchale.hscope | So the site opens where you left off |
| Grid or list view, light or dark theme | kahanchale.view, kahanchale.theme | Your display preferences |
| Photo links already looked up | kahanchale.img1, kahanchale.hero1 | Makes pictures load faster and avoids repeat requests |
| Your approximate location, only if you turned it on | kahanchale.loc | To show places near you. See the next section |
Older versions of the site used the name "trekkatta" for some of these items. They are the same kind of data and can be deleted the same way.
4. Your location, if you turn it on
The site never asks for your location by itself. It does so only when you press Use my location in Settings (or the matching button on Home). Your browser then asks for permission, and you can say no.
If you say yes, this is what happens, step by step:
- Your browser gives the site your coordinates. The site rounds them to two decimal places, which is roughly a 1 km area, and works with the rounded values from then on.
- The site compares them with the places it lists to find the nearest state and district. This happens in your browser.
- To show your town name, the rounded coordinates are sent to a free reverse geocoding service, BigDataCloud. If that fails, the same rounded coordinates go to OpenStreetMap Nominatim instead. These requests come from your browser directly. They do not pass through us, and we do not see them. Like any website, those services can see your IP address.
- The result (rounded coordinates, state, district and town name) is saved in your browser only.
To stop and delete it, open Settings and press Turn off. The saved location is erased. If you prefer, you can set your state and district by hand in the same screen. Choosing a place by hand sends nothing anywhere. You can also block location for this site from your browser's address bar at any time.
5. Other services your browser talks to
The site is a static website. When you open it, your browser fetches the page and its files from the host, and some pictures from other places. Each of these services can see your IP address, browser type and the time of the request, as any website would. We do not receive that information from them.
| Service | What it does here | What it can see |
|---|---|---|
| Netlify (hosting) | Serves the site's pages and files | IP address, device and browser details, pages requested. Held in their server logs under their own policy |
| Google Fonts | Supplies the typefaces used on the main site | IP address and browser details when fonts load |
| Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons | Place photographs are looked up by the place's name, and the page for the place is linked for credit | The place name being looked up, plus your IP address. It does not include anything about you |
| Unsplash | Some photographs are loaded from its image network, credited to the photographers | IP address and the picture requested |
| BigDataCloud, OpenStreetMap Nominatim | Find your town name, only if you turned location on | Rounded coordinates and IP address |
These services have their own privacy policies, which apply to what they do. The two pages you are reading now, Privacy and Terms, load none of them: they use only your device's own fonts.
6. If you message us
The "Suggest a place" and "Add full details" forms do not send anything to a server. When you press a send button, the site opens WhatsApp or your email app with your message already written, and you press send yourself. Until then, what you typed stays on your screen.
Once you send a message, it reaches me through WhatsApp or email, so it also passes through those services under their own policies. What I receive is whatever you chose to write: usually a place name, details about it, and your name or contact if you added them.
- Why I use it: to check the suggestion, add or correct a place, credit you if you want credit, and reply to you.
- Who sees it: only me. I do not pass it on or use it for marketing.
- How long I keep it: as long as it is useful for the place entry or our conversation. You can ask me to delete it at any time.
If you email or message me for any other reason, the same applies.
7. Links to other sites
The site links to my Instagram, YouTube, Threads and blog, and to online stores such as Amazon, Flipkart and Dreambook where my book can be bought. Each place also has an Open in Maps button that opens Google Maps with that place's location, and Wikipedia and photographer pages for credits. None of these links carries any information about you. Once you open a link, that site's own privacy policy applies, not this one.
8. Children
The site is general travel information. It does not ask anyone, of any age, for personal details, and it does not track anyone. If a child sends me a message, I will not use it for anything other than replying, and I will delete it on request from the child or a parent or guardian.
9. Your choices and rights
- Delete what is on your device: clear the site data for this website in your browser, or use Turn off for location.
- Refuse location: say no when the browser asks, or use the state and district chooser.
- Ask about messages you sent me: you can ask what I hold, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it. I will reply within 30 days, and usually much sooner.
- Your rights under Indian law: under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you have the right to information about your personal data, to correction and erasure, and to have a grievance heard. You can use any of them by writing to the address below. If you are not satisfied with my response, you may take the matter to the Data Protection Board of India, as the law provides.
10. Security
The site is served over HTTPS. Because we do not hold your personal data, there is very little to lose. Please still avoid sending sensitive details such as bank or ID numbers in any message to me. I will never ask for them.
11. Changes to this policy
If the way the site handles information changes, I will update this page and the "last updated" date at the top.
12. Contact and grievances
For any question, request or complaint about privacy, write to Santosh Pandey at travelwala.chora@gmail.com, or send a direct message on Instagram at @travelwala.chora. Please write "Privacy" in the subject so it is easy to find.
