About Unakoti
A forest hillside in North East Tripura with giant rock cut carvings of Shiva and other gods, from about the seventh to ninth century. The name means one crore less one, from a legend of ninety nine lakh and so on gods who stopped here. The Unakoti Kal Bhairava head is about 30 feet high. Steps lead down through the forest to the figures, a stream and a waterfall, and the Ashokastami Mela in April draws crowds. It is far from Agartala, so plan a night in Kailashahar.
