About Majuli Island
One of the largest river islands in the world, in the middle of the Brahmaputra, reached by a ferry from Nimati Ghat near Jorhat. The island is the centre of Assamese Vaishnav culture, with satras (monasteries) that preserve dance, drama and mask making. Birds come in winter, bamboo houses stand on stilts, and the Raas Leela in November is the great festival. The island has shrunk with erosion, and floods in the monsoon can cut off roads.
