About Hirakud Dam
A long earthen dam on the Mahanadi, completed in 1957, with a reservoir that spreads far into the hills. Two viewing towers, Gandhi Minar and Nehru Minar, give a view of the lake and the dam wall, and boat rides run from Burla. The gates open during floods in August and September, and then the sight is dramatic. It is a short drive from Sambalpur.
